The Department of Labour and Social Welfare, Patna University was established in 1948 with a view to imparting training to young men and women aspiring after jobs in industrial establishments, government departments and social
welfare agencies. The department first awarded a diploma after one year training but from 1951, it started awarding M.A. degree in Labour & Social Welfare. Since July 2006, the nomenclature of the department has been changed
as per the approval of the Hon’ble Chancellor of Patna University from L.S.W. to PMIR.
The objective of the M.A. course in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations is to provide professional education to those who want to prepare for the jobs of Labour Officers, Personnel Officers and Administrative Officers.
The other objectives are to provide background knowledge of social work, to provide practical experience of field-work concerned with personnel management, industrial relations and social welfare, to develop leadership
qualities among students to be used in labour and social welfare field and to train students in social research. Those who are trained in the department get preference in employment for jobs connected with labour welfare,
personnel management, industrial relations, human resource development, labour administration, social welfare etc. The course avoids extreme specialization and yet provides the trainees special knowledge of the subjects
connected with personnel management, industrial relations and labour and social welfare. The alumni of the department are employed in various capacities in different industry, organizations and government departments in
different parts of the country and many of them are holding top positions in the fields of personnel management, industrial relation, administration and human resource development in both public and private sectors including
